When I was born, the doctor told my father that I’d be at least 1 head taller than him. Fast-forward 18-years, and I was 6’8 – the doctor was right.
Being tall has brought me many advantages, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world. It has served me well in various facets of life, from sports to work. However, it also presents its fair share of challenges in a world that isn’t necessarily built to cater to taller people – including fashion.
From my late teens, shopping for clothes has always been a minefield. Tops would usually be the right width, but the body and sleeve length were always too short. Sometimes the latter would be spot on, but the width would be off. And let’s not even get started on trousers and the touchy subject of ankle swingers. It’s not a good look for anyone!
We all know that social pressures and expectations come with fashion, and this applies to tall people too. As I grew older, I realised that tall men have always drawn the short straw when it comes to clothing. There’s very little out there, with big brands having a limited range and niche outfitters using outdated styles that even my grandfather would cringe at.
